Quote2Win: Simplify Pricing and Discounts With New PROS App

When dealing with sales, it can be easy for business owners and professionals to get caught up in the process of quoting and pricing, instead of spending time actually selling their product.

Pricing and revenue management software provider PROS recently announced a newly enhanced quoting solution to help companies speed up the quoting process.

Quote2Win

Quote2Win is a native application developed for use on Salesforce's Force.com that aims to help small and medium sized businesses with sales quoting and pricing.

Said Patrick Schneidau, Vice President of Product Marketing for PROS:

“As expanding small and medium-sized companies face the need to grow their sales headcounts, as well as address an increasing number of products and new competition, they often find that their existing pricing and quoting processes no longer scale. And in today's environment, winning deals is based on a company's speed and agility to respond to customer's needs, so they need a better answer.”

The service aims to eliminate the need for multiple price books and spreadsheets, allowing salespersons to give quicker answers to clients regarding pricing and discounts.

Said Schneidau:

Salesforce.com workflows, they can respond more quickly and with greater ease, giving them more time to sell.”

More specifically, Quote2Win allows users to create a custom list of products and their prices, allowing them to account for promotions and discounts, bundles with other essential items, markups, total revenue from sales, and more. Users can create a completely custom pricing system, or use one of Quote2Win's standard pricing methods.

Of course there are plenty of pricing solutions currently available, such as the native Salesforce quoting tool. But Quote2Win's customization and simplified features, along with its integration with the popular Salesforce, could make it a helpful tool for small businesses that want to simplify the pricing process as their business grows.

Launch Your Small Business Like The iPhone 5

You know who knows how to bring the hype and launch a product? Yep, you guessed it. Apple. Apple just recently launched their newest smartphone to rule them all called the iPhone 5.

Like most big Apple launches (iPad, Macs, iPod, etc…) they know that if you just do one thing, you can get everybody talking about it. And that one thing is…

Be Awesome!

It's no coincidence that Apple's stock jumps up and down during and before a big product launch. When they launch a new product, the world reacts. Fans clamor over how soon they can get their hands on it. Tech sites scramble to for the early scoops and instant updates on features. It's a big deal.

But it's only a big deal because the product is good; more than good.

Case in point, you can go ahead and try to launch anything, but if it's not worth talking about; if it's not amazing… then well, nobody's going to talk about it. It's like the people who still send out press releases announcing their CEO is speaking at an event in Idaho. Big whoop. Nobody cares about that. It's a complete waste of time. It's not news.

To do a launch correctly you have to make sure you have something worth talking about.  And that's the hard part. What's worth talking about at your business?

Remember, your audience isn't everybody, it is probably more like the people in your industry. You don't have to impress the world like Apple does. You just have to impress your target market.

So again, what's new and amazing with your business? Don't know? Can't think of anything?

Then it's time to start thinking about how to cook something up. What does you product or service do that nobody else can? There has got to be something unique about your business that your competitors can't do? This is called your unique value proposition (UVP). Figure out what this is and say it loudly, otherwise, why will your customers choose you over your competitors?

Once you have your UVP figured out, you can begin to start thinking about how to leverage a launch of your product/service. Think of a launch like a Hollywood movie trailer. They put out a teaser video enticing us about something that is coming. Then, when the movie is released, we all go running to the theater to see it, thus creating a large opening weekend profit number which pretty much defines the success of a movie nowadays.

Plan your big launch day a few weeks or a few months out and tease your customers with your big news. Create videos and podcasts around the launch and release them on YouTube and your blog or website. Leak out small bits of information ahead of time for the media to grab on to. Build hype!

Then, on your launch day, hold a launch event like Apple does. No, you don't have to invite 50,000 people. You could do the entire event virtually through a live webinar, or Google hangout. It doesn't have to be complicated. Invite the media to join the launch and answer questions for them and your customers. Have fun with it! Make it an event that people want to be part of.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to be awesome.

Trying To Figure Out The Secret to Facebook? myList Can Help You Crack The Code

So you want to know what Facebook‘s all about? Join the thousands upon thousands of businesses who just can't crack it open and get some decent followership or use it to their advantage. This is the trouble faced by businesses old and new just getting into the social scene. Once you've got followers, the logical question to ask is “what's next?”

In social media, users often have short attention spans and don't really look much at where they clicked “Like.” It's become a problem for businesses struggling with social environments on the Web, and Facebook is probably one of the most prominent of these trouble areas. There's an app on Facebook that can help you get rid of this barrier between you and your followers by providing them with searchable content within a “list” environment.

myList is a free application that allows you to establish more intimate relationships with your friends and people who follow you and/or your business. When you share something on your list, it appears on the results of searches from other users regardless of whether they're fans on your Facebook page or not. Even more lovely is the ability for your Facebook fans to see content connected to your business website through a shortened URL link.

myList establishes closer relationships between you and your followers and those who haven't gotten to know you yet. So, if you don't have followers on Facebook, it doesn't really matter. They'll see what you have to offer if it interests them. Consider this like a social search engine that indexes things you share, rather than solid Web content. It's a more intuitive process that connects you easily to the rest of the world in the social sphere.

If you want to see a good example of how myList connects your Facebook page to your website, check out P.C. Richard & Son's Facebook page. If you think that myList is worth it, don't wait any further!

New variant of TDL-4 botnet includes capability to generate \'disposable\' C&C domain names

A new variant of the TDL-4 botnet has infected approximately 250,000 unique victims.

Detected by Damballa Labs, its research found that it now has a unique domain generation algorithm (DGA)-based command-and-control (C&C) capability as part of its improving arsenal of evasion techniques. This makes TDL-4 capable of generating unique ‘disposable' C&C domain names, making the C&C virtually undetectable by blacklisting and signature-based technologies.

One tactic for infection involves a click-fraud campaign that redirects users from legitimate ads on major sites to suspicious URLs. Here, victims are redirected from major website to URLs where the owner receives money for clicks. According to Damballa Labs, anti-virus has been unsuccessful in detecting the attack and the infection, which is a variant of malware from the TDL-4 botnet.

Damballa Labs said that the infection is a new iteration of TDL-4 and the discovery was made and validated purely based on network behavioural analysis without the need for a malware sample, which it or other anti-virus firms have been able to capture.

It said: “The newly discovered capabilities in TDL-4 are significant in that they give the ‘indestructible botnet' even more elusive capabilities. TDL-4 already evades host-based detection and remediation due to its ability to infect master boot records and by using peer-to-peer communications.”

Victims so far include Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and ISPs. It has already infected 46 of the Fortune 500 companies and a total of 85 hosting servers, while 418 unique domains have been identified as being related to the threat.

The top three hosting countries for the C&C servers are Russia (26 hosts), Romania (15 hosts) and the Netherlands (12 hosts).

Once described as the world's most complex botnet, when detected a year ago it could control up to four million computers and had capabilities including encrypted communications, a peer-to-peer network for sending commands to control infected computers and a proxy server functionality to enable users to sell anonymous internet access through infected computers.

Joseph Souren, vice president and general manager of Wave Systems EMEA, said: “We don't currently know how TDL-4 generates the URL at this point. We just know it keeps changing. And if you're changing the URL all the time, it takes longer to figure out what the software is about, and what it is doing.

“The best defence is based on the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip. The TPM stores the signatures of every piece of software on the machine, and the ones that are most important are used early in the boot process before the anti-virus initiates.”

Videoconferencing: Which Solution Is Best For Your Small Business?

In 2008, the Consumer Electronics Association reported that while more than 50 million Americans could work from home, only 2.5 million actually did. That divide has continued to shrink in recent years as businesses have found ways to cut costs on paying for office space while offering employees a great perk:  not having to battle traffic every morning to get to an office.

But changing minds call for changing technology. Business owners need a way to stay in touch with workers throughout the day and the need goes beyond the traditional method of communicating via telephone. Telecommuters need a way to be able to have a face-to-face chat with employers using a method that's both inexpensive and reliable.

“The real advantage is about being able to make decisions faster, to scale knowledge within an organization more easily and to unify an organization,” Cisco TelePresence Systems Business Unit general manager Snorre Kjesbu told UK magazine V3. Yes, you can save on travel, and carbon emissions, but there are much more to video tools than that,” he said.”

Different businesses have different needs when it comes to videoconferencing. Some business have an interest in group video chats with people in different locations. Some business simply want to be able to have regular one-on-one time with a client or employee. And some businesses are interested in a high definition visual experience, which is ideal for sharing presentations or videos. Below is a great solution to meet each need.

Inexpensive

Skype has long been the popular choice for consumers and it's an easy, inexpensive solution for small businesses. Skype Business offers a small business plan for those who need multiple participants, but no promises of HD quality video are offered. Plans start at $4.99 per month.

High Quality

Cisco WebEx offers a variety of plans, ranging from a free plan that includes up to three attendees per meeting and standard quality video to a $49 monthly plan that allows 25 people per meeting and has high definition video. For small businesses interested in something in between, a premium plan is available that allows up to 8 people per meeting and high quality video but only costs $24 per month.

Inexpensive, High Quality

Holding its own against the competition is Zoom.us, a Cloud-based solution that offers HD video and up to 15 participants without charging a dime. The service recently launched to good reviews, including a stellar write-up from The Wall Street Journal‘s Walter S. Moss. “I've been testing Zoom.us, and despite a few limitations, I like it a lot and can recommend it,” Moss wrote. “In all but one of my tests, video was sharp and smooth, and all the features worked as promised.”

Ramon had the chance to test Zoom.us video solution up close and personal with Nick Chong, Product Manager. Using a tablet, smartphone and computer Ramon was able to conduct a 3 live streamed video conference and what was ironic about it, Ramon said the WiFi in the hotel they were in was not that great. Ramon was also impressed with how one of the remote persons on the video conference was able to share their screen and Ramon saw streaming video from their screen on Ramon's own screen â€" that was pretty impressive. Finally, Zoom.us, in this version Nick explained is democratized. Every use can quickly and easily share their screen with someone else.

Nick explained the secret sauce of Zoom.us and all video conferencing solutions is how well they are able to code and encode (called “codec”) the video and audio signal from the computer (are smartphones) microphone and video camera. The better the codec the better the video conference solution will be.

We've likely only seen the beginning of how videoconferencing will transform small businesses. This technology can help businesses save money on travel, connect business owners with long distance clients, and open up possibilities for telecommuting. Small business owners should investigate the features of each service and try out several personally before investing in a monthly subscription fee.

Failure Rates by Sector: The Real Numbers

“Mamas don't let your babies grow up to start construction companies,” could be the first line of a country song about new business failure rates. Five years after starting, the share of mining companies remaining alive is nearly 15 percentage points higher than the fraction of construction businesses still in operation (52.3 percent versus 36.4 percent).

Five Year Survival Rates for Startups by Industry Sector

Source: Created from data from the Census Bureau's Business Dynamics Statistics

In the figure above, I have plotted the five year survival rates for new companies founded in 2005 using data from the Census Bureau's Business Dynamics Statistics.

While there are many sources of data on start-up failure rates, these are probably the best. They come from a longitudinal database of businesses that government economists and statisticians created by linking together annual administrative records, such as unemployment insurance filings. (The use of administrative records eliminates errors that emerge from efforts to survey company owners.)

Because the database was designed for researchers, the data are not presented in the most user friendly way. Therefore, I have reorganized them into a chart which shows the survival rates by industry sector.

As you can see, the odds that a new business survives its early years vary a lot by sector. In order from highest to lowest five year survival rates, the sectors are:

  • mining (51.3 percent)
  • manufacturing (48.4 percent)
  • services (47.6 percent)
  • wholesaling and agriculture (47.4 percent)
  • retailing (41.1 percent)
  • finance, insurance, and real estate (39.6 percent)
  • transportation, communications and utilities (39.4 percent)
  • construction (36.4 percent)

‘Tis The Season To Start Your Holiday Marketing – 4 Points To Help Make It Jolly

Not many people shop for gifts in the middle of September, but in the business world, the holiday shopping season is not very far away. Retail sales aren't the biggest problem for you at this moment, but as the season of joy approaches, so does your need to market to your customers. Holiday shopping is unique on its own because it is the only time in which customers rampage through every shop, leaving its shelves dry at around 5 in the afternoon.

To fully take advantage of the holiday shopping spree and Black Friday sales, however, you must adopt certain promotional strategies to best fit the season to be jolly. The advent of mobile consumer technologies changes everything for better or worse, and we also must learn to change with the fickle nature of the market.

Responsys, a company that provides email marketing solutions, provides a few words on how you should develop your promotional strategies during the holiday shopping frenzy that parades on into the “Last Sleigh day” on December 21st. Here are a few pointers:

  • Free shipping during the holiday season gets you lots of perks. Customers on holiday shopping errands prefer not to empty their pockets so quickly. They'll appreciate any generosity they can get. Responsys found that over 50 percent of businesses already offer free shipping to their customers. Retail sales have a tendency to do extraordinarily well when customers are met with free shipping offers.
  • Keep in mind that mobile shopping is now a huge factor on the market. Customers are now ordering on their mobile devices more than ever. This should reflect positively on any online retail sales you want to make. This year, mobile is king and it's ready to make its reign on the land. If you don't cater to your mobile customers, you're missing out on a giant opportunity. Emailing your customers with mobile-ready emails that direct them to websites that can be seen on a mobile device will give you an edge over your competitors.
  • Holiday shopping often happens until December 21st. Retail sales tend to be highest on the day before Thanksgiving, the day itself, Black Friday, and (surprisingly enough) on Christmas Day (because customers are cashing in on whatever the gift cards they just received can buy). Your best bet is to email your customers on these days with special offers. Don't forget, though, to also email them on December 21st, which is the last day they can count on express shipping to arrive before Christmas.
  • Some argue that Black Friday has fallen backwards into Thanksgiving Day. This is largely due to the amount of emails sent on that day with special offers. Expect higher retail sales on Thanksgiving Day if you send an email to your customers at that time.

Let's recap a bit. Here are the points in a nutshell: Offer free shipping until the holiday bonanza is over, send your customers emails that are compatible with their mobile devices, give them emails on December the 21st reminding them that it's the last day they can expect express shipping, and try to see how Thanksgiving Day will work out for you. A combination of all of these will surely boost your sales this holiday season.Optimized with InboundWriter

Iran hits back at hacking claims and accuses Siemens of sabotaging equipment

Iran has ‘categorically rejected' recent reports that it is actively hacking US banks.

According to the Fars news agency, the head of Iran's Civil Defense Organisation, Gholam Reza Jalali, said that westerners are trying to portray Iran as a threat in cyber space to achieve their goals.

The allegations came from media reports that hackers from the Middle East had repeatedly attacked Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Co and Citigroup Inc over the past year as part of a broad cyber campaign targeting the United States.

US national security officials alleged last week that attacks were being carried out by Iran, with security sources telling the Chicago Tribune and NBC News that the attacks on the three largest US banks originated in Iran, but it was not clear if they were launched by the state, groups working on behalf of the government, or ‘patriotic' citizens.

In reply, Jalali dismissed the reports, saying that these reports are aimed at demonizing Iran in cyber space to portray the country as a global threat to cyber security and justify the US and Israeli cyber attacks on Iran.

In a separate report by the Jerusalem Post, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of the Iranian Parliament's national security committee has accused Siemens of sabotaging its nuclear program after Iranian security experts discovered small explosives embedded in nuclear energy equipment.

Boroujerdi said ‘the equipment was supposed to blow up after installation in order to destroy our [nuclear] systems' while Jalali had accused Siemens of delivering to the ‘enemies of Iran information' via its SCADA Siemens program to help the Stuxnet virus infiltrate Iran's facilities.

Siemens immediately dismissed the allegations, with Deutsche Presse-Agentur quoting company spokesman Alexander Machowetz as saying: “We have no business dealings related to the Iranian nuclear program.”

As reported by SC Magazine last month, a report by the New York Times claimed that the United States and Israel were behind the Stuxnet virus that hit SCADA-based systems in Iran. Imperva's director of security strategy Rob Rachwald said that these actions showed that the Obama administration has given its approval to the use of cyber tools in espionage.

Emergency patch released for Internet Explorer zero-day flaw

Microsoft released update MS12-063 to address the zero-day vulnerability in Internet Explorer on Friday afternoon.

Affecting versions 9 and earlier of Internet Explorer, Yunsun Wee, director of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing said that MS12-063 also resolves four privately disclosed vulnerabilities that were not being exploited.

Wee said: “The majority of customers have automatic updates enabled and will not need to take any action because protections will be downloaded and installed automatically. For those manually updating, we encourage you to apply this update as quickly as possible.”

Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, said: “Interestingly in the bulleti,n Microsoft credits TippingPoint for reporting CVE-2012-4969. We recommend installing the update as soon as possible, even if you are not running one of the configurations that are currently being exploited, i.e. Internet Explorer plus Flash or version Java v1.6. Attackers are surely working on way to exploit the vulnerability directly without the help of plug-ins.”

Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle, said: “Microsoft had to respond very quickly to this bug. In addition to the serious security threats it posed to their customers, Internet Explorer's market share is at risk. Many security pundits and organizations have been telling users to switch browsers until a patch is available. I'm sure that got the attention of a lot of Microsoft executives.

“Microsoft's ability to go from advisory to patch release so quickly demonstrates their commitment to providing customers with a secure computing environment. Earlier this year, Microsoft stated that they had enough resources to deliver an IE patch every month if necessary. Those additional resources certainly helped them deliver this patch in record time.”

Gartner's Jake MacDonald, said: “Microsoft's motivation to quickly release the patch out of band was affected by calls from various enterprises and governments to ban the use of IE until the issue was resolved.

“What can we learn from this incident? This is not the first time this has happened on Internet Explorer and it will not be the last. Google Chrome has had them. So has Firefox. When will we learn? The answer isn't to switch browsers, the answer is to standardise on more than one browser.”

Wal-Mart Stops Selling Amazon Kindle

In a move seeming like part of a strategy to compete with an arch rival in the retail market, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced recently it would stop carrying Amazon Kindle e-readers when existing stock is depleted. What small business owners can probably take from this move (besides the fact that if you still want to buy a Kindle at your local Wal-Mart, you'd better hurry :) ) is that every decision brings with it implications for your company's long term success and growth. There are many factors that go into staying competitive for businesses large and small. How you face each could have ripple effects far into the future.

Clash of the Titans

Marketing for the competition. At first glance, Wal-Mart's decision to stop carrying the Kindle Fire HD, following a similar decision by Target earlier this year, could be seen as totally unrelated to its struggle to compete with Amazon's formidable online retail business. However, a closer look will reveal Wal-Mart's overall strategy. The Kindle is more than just a product. It is a means that allows Amazon to market millions of products in direct competition with Wal-Mart and other retailers. Reuters

The escalation of hostilities. The recent Wal-Mart decision isn't the first sign that the huge brick and mortar retail giant is already maneuvering to compete with Amazon's overwhelming supremacy in the online retail market. Wal-Mart has seen the writing on the wall and is making efforts to reverse the trend and perhaps even take a bite out of the online retail market with its own search engine for products, called “Polaris.” TechCrunch

How You Compete

Become a problem-solving rock star. In the end, the ability to solve problems for customers is what sets a great business leader apart. Some people naturally possess the gift of problem solving, but fortunately for the rest of us, it is a learnable trait. Here are some steps we can all take to become better problem solvers and business leaders in the long run. Startup Professionals Musings

Recruit some incredible talent. A recent study suggests effective recruitment impacts profit growth far more than any other HR function, including onboarding, retention, and work life balance. For small businesses, the data suggests the talent you recruit is even more critical, since you have fewer overall workers than a corporate behemoth. Here are some steps you should consider to improve your search for the super stars you need to make your business shine. Grow Smart Biz

Listen more attentively. That's right, you should spend more time listening. Surprisingly (or maybe not) customers don't want to hear a long list of reasons you're better than the competition. Though it may sound counter intuitive, the best way to compete is not to try to win over customers, but to help them seriously decide what product or solution really meets their needs. Kexino

Set yourself apart. Businesses and brands must create an impression in the potential customer's mind, making themselves and their products memorable so that they stand out from the competition. Focus on unconventional solutions and set yourself apart. This post looks at some unconventional ways to make a corporate event memorable. Use it to brainstorm on ways you can make your product or service unforgettable too. Print Runner Blog

Choose the right business model. When online mompreneur Holly Reisem Hanna found herself banned from Google Adsense, she was forced to explore another method for monetizing her online content: affiliate marketing. While sometimes small business owners may be attached to a specific business model or approach to bring in revenue, business survival means opening your mind to new possibilities. Seek out options you haven't tried before and see what opportunities present themselves. The Work At Home Woman
